I am SOOOO excited for the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon which is now less than 3 weeks away. Being on the Board of Directors allows me to be involved in high level decision making year-round and it's incredible to see everything all come together for the race. This year I was chosen to be a ForeRunner, which is a social media ambassador. It motivated me to launch this website and start blogging! I still need to work on posting more frequent blogs though ;)
I'll be running the half marathon for the 5th time; this is the race I have run the most number of times. I'll also run/walk the 5K with my best guy friend, Chris. We walked his first 5K together at this race last year and this seems to be a new tradition for us. He’s also running the 10K this year which will be his first race without me (so clearly it will be incredibly boring for him). I have my friend Sarah, whom I've known since elementary school, coming out from Victoria to run the 10K and 5K! I've also inspired a few others to take on the doubles challenge and complete the noon 5K after the morning half marathon or 10K! Let's see if I can create something official out of this in the future years :D
Sarah and I are volunteering at the race site bright and early on Saturday, helping to check in volunteers and set up the venue with the incredible couple who is responsible for leading this task every year. I’ll likely be helping them out with various tasks on Friday as well because I’ve taken the day off work to volunteer and assist whoever and however I need to. I'll also be participating in the Speaker Series at 1pm on both Friday and Saturday along with other ForeRunners. We’ll be talking about the Calgary Marathon and why we love it. Perhaps I should just read this post? :D Please come and see us!
Also featured at the Speaker Series is Jordan Alicandro, the at-home winner of The Biggest Loser’s Season 16. During Jordan’s “update interview” (I don’t know what they’re called) after being sent home, he mentioned that he wanted to run a half marathon. Jordan lives in Surrey, BC with his wife and their new son. I took a chance and reached out to him via Twitter and asked if he would consider running Calgary Marathon’s Centaur Subaru Half Marathon as his first half and he agreed! I sent his contact info over to our incredible marketing coordinator, Erin (poor thing has to deal with all of my crazy ideas) and they sorted it out. Jordan’s transformation is INCREDIBLE (check out the link for photos). He’s super friendly and I’m so excited to meet him!
In addition to volunteering and racing, I’ll be attending the VIP event on Friday night for a few hours along with elites, sponsors, featured charity reps, committee leaders, staff, fellow board members and ForeRunners and others. My other best friend, Carol, who is a new committee leader will be there as well so of course it’s going to be an amazing time. We’ll be socializing at National on Stephen Ave, enjoying their delicious appetizers and some beverages and recognizing some key people. I’ll post more about the event after.
This is also going to be my first year running for Charity! I’ve chosen Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) because I’m a huge animal lover and think the work these guys do is incredible. If you want to donate to my fundraising efforts, here’s the link for my page.
I’d also like to give a quick shout-out to some incredible people who make the Calgary Marathon a spectacular event and one that I am so proud to be a part of on many levels. Executive Director: Kirsten Fleming, Race Director: Cheryl Lowery, Marketing Assistant: Erin Healy, Junior Race Director: Adam Kwitko (2015 is his first race in this role!), Scotiabank Charity Challenge Manager: Jennifer Ashley, the incredible Volunteer Organizing Committee and race week/day volunteers, my fellow Board members and of course our sponsors. Please take a minute to thank every volunteer or race crew member you come across on race weekend, it means a lot to them!
